Vaping is supposedly better than smoking cigarettes. Does that mean it’s good for your teeth and dental health? No, not at all.

Vaping is an electronic version of smoking that’s rising in popularity. E-cigarettes work by heating up a liquid (typically nicotine) to turn it into vapour that can be inhaled. It has been considered a healthier alternative to traditional tobacco products, but it can cause long term damage to your teeth, mouth and gums.

What vaping does to your teeth

Vaping can lead to many serious dental issues. E-cigarettes heat up the mouth creating the perfect environment for harmful bacteria, priming your mouth for disease.

The liquid used in e-cigarettes can also cause oral issues when it remains on your teeth and gums for long periods of time. Vapes with nicotine can exacerbate these conditions.

Tooth decay and cavities

Excess bacteria in the mouth, caused by e-cigarettes, can increase your chance of tooth decay and cavities.

Dry mouth

Excess bacteria and the vaping aerosol itself can cause dry mouth, a condition that can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, mouth sores and bad breath.

Inflamed gums

E-cigarettes can also trigger an inflammatory response in gum tissues, which can not only be sore and irritating but can also lead to many periodontal diseases. Some studies show that this risk increases with flavoured vaping liquids.

Tooth discolouration

Vaping liquids that contain nicotine can not only increase your risk of all of the above but can also stain your teeth. It sticks to the enamel, creating a rougher surface that encourages plaque and grime buildup.

Recommendations

Avoiding vaping altogether is our recommendation. However, if you do vape, limit your nicotine intake, drink water afterwards and be diligent with oral hygiene habits and dental checkups.
